Church of the Nazarene in the Philippines

How do you multiply churches?  We received the following email from the District Superintendent of Metro Manila. This past year the Metro Manila District led the Philippines with 500 people received into membership by profession of faith.  The letter below is slightly edited for clarity.

It is very interesting that we are now intentionally looking at the strategies we use to accomplish our ministries. This is really a good sign of progress that we are uneasy with what we are doing if we found it less-effective (ineffective is not the right word I suppose).   Let me just share with you that what we discovered here (in Metro Manila) is something to be looked into. We have returned to the basic principle, which is, church planting is being done by the local church and not by the district. The district has so many concerns that it cannot be consistent in planting.  Even more, the local people’s initiative dies when the district leaders are in the forefront.  Let me brag a little (holy bragging he he he!) My last report to our District Advisory Board records that we already have 16 new church planting projects at no cost from the district, except of course, administration and representation. Our target is to organize even half of these next year.  We found out that people are getting excited and active if they are the ones doing the work and/or being tasked to do it. This is not new, this is, in fact, basic.  I hope this will at least inspire all of us. If you want an example, we have one church here with 5 new initiatives…do you want to know how many they will accept this year as full members?…..at least 200! One thing is sure, if our people are motivated and know the direction, they will do the task. Let them take the risk…let them fail if necessary …this is the best teacher anyway!
